Spicing It Up

You may not recognize what is on my grits. There are three spices here, Tumeric, ginger, and cinnamon. No, this does not alter the taste. I know you are scratching your head right, but sit back and open yourself up to a new way of thinking.

If you are a fan of Mexican,Mediterranean or Chinese cuisine, it is probably because of the spices. On this day I ran out of my Tumeric/Ginger supplement I went to my spice cabinet and pulled both along with Cinnamon. The Tumeric is great for the relief of arthritic pain and swelling. Ginger is also used as an anti-inflammatory agent and antioxidant. Cinnamon is used to speed up the metabolism  of carbohydrates.

Herbs and spices are also mentioned numerous times in the Bible. In Genesis 1:29 it mentions herbs. Leviticas 2:1 talks about Frankincense, which is also a strong spice for healing and was presented at the feet of Jesus. In Exodus 25:6 it talks about using spices for anointing. The queen of Sheba presented the king spices because they were so highly valued.

The moral to this story is that you can improve your health by adding something as simple as a spice. You can add them to your tea, coffee, meats, and vegetables. While most you may not taste, you will slowly change your body in time.

In the time of Jesus spices were also used on the deceased as an embalming agent. There are so many ways to use spices. Yes I know some like frankincense can be pricy but aren’t  you worth it?

Have a great day.

Smooth Your Way To Better Health

While I am not a big fan of “diets,” I am a fan of smoothies. They are quick, easy, and can be loaded with all the right stuff!

Today’s  smoothie is this….

Oh my, you almost missed it. Have not even given it a name. If you follow me on Facebook, then you have already gotten this recipe.

No, you won’t find this in a recipe book. As a natural health enthusiast, I am always looking for healthier options and playing with whatever I have in my kitchen at the time. This recipe is good for your immune system and is high in potassium. If there is something in it that you don’t like or have an allergy to simply alternate with a veggie like spinach or another fruit of your choice. My recipe also contains pumkin spice, honey, and tumeric, which also have health benefits. Here’s the recipe:

Smoothie to supercharge you. 1/2 mango, 1 whole banana (chill in frige for a day before use),6 large black cherries, 2 teaspoons honey, 1/2 teaspoon pumkin spice,a splash of tumeric powder. Add ice and blend in a large Bullet cup. Enjoy!

Take charge of your health and create your own smoothie!

Have a great day guys!

Day Trip – New Bern

On this day, my sister and I decided to travel to New Bern for breakfast. After a short trip, we arrived at Crema Brew Coffee Shop. We ordered lattes and muffins to go. We decided that instead of eating in the crowded coffee shop, we would hop over to the water front to enjoy our meal.

We found the perfect spot at a bench looking out over the waterfront. The perfect breakfast  of chocolate chip capuchin muffin and a dark chocolate latte while taking in the cool breeze  and basking in the gorgeous landscape around us. The perfect beginning to my day.

On the way back, we made an unscheduled stop at Cedar Grove Cemetery. While some may find cemeteries gross or scary, I find them adventurous and full of history. Here are a few pics.

Thanks for taking this journey with me. Plan your own day trip and take the time to enjoy interesting places.

Spam It Up

Budget meals with class

With trips to the grocery store averaging more than $120/week I set out to create some budget friendly meals that are still pretty healthy.

Introducing…

It’s not your old fashion Spam anymore. It was not only great in this dish but is also great in omelets.

Here’s how I began:

In a deep frying pan add 1/2 cup frozen diced onions and 1/2 cup frozen diced green peppers in olive oil and Sautee.

Add roughly 1/2 cup of Spam cut into cubes and Sautee till edges are slightly brown.

Add one can of mixed vegetables any brand.

Add one box of the noodles from a Mac n cheese box and cook until the noodles are done.

Sprinkle grated cheese on too or on your plate

The plated lunch.

Let me know how yours turns out.

Have a blessed day.

Making A Budget Friendly Meal

At a time when retailers are making it a marketing game against the general consumer you can still win.

My husband loves to eat out and I don’t like to cook but even with the skyrocketing prices it is cheaper and healthier to eat at home. Here is one meal you can fix at home for about ten bucks and still feed about four people.

Crock Pot Easy Fix

You can’t go wrong with this boneless Applewood Spiral Ham ($8.49 at Food Lion). Add red potatoes, apple slices and broccoli. I added just enough water to cook the veggies.

You can also still save at the checkout by using coupons. While coupons are limited most larger grocery chains have their own savings programs.

Stock up on staples that can be put in plastic containers for long term storage like flour, sugar, oatmeal, dried beans when they are on sale.

Make the most of reward programs…they do make a difference in the long run. Stay healthy and throw your savings into a jar for that special event or purchase.

Have a great day!

No Nonsense Meals

I admittedly don’t like to cook! At my age it is more important than ever to eat healthy.

My husband is a great cook but seems to fail miserably when it comes to adding veggies to the menu.

So here is my quick lunch…

Collards & Cornbread

Ok before you turn up your nose at it, it is simple, uses leftovers, and cost pennies to make!

I zapped frozen leftover collards in the microwave. The cornbread was made from a mix (Southeastern Mills Cornbread Mix) and baked in a bread pan at 400 degrees.

It was delicious, nutritional and easy to make.

Have a great day!

Great Eats

My husband will tell you that I am a very finicky eater, which I am. As a photography I am always on the lookout for unique places and things when I spotted this sign: Rose’s Kitchen.

This place looks like an old store but clearly has its own personality

Ms. Mary took our order and made sure we had everything we needed. She and other staff members could not have been nicer.

Thanks Ms. Mary for a great dining experience.

As a Google rater I will have to give this establishment a 10 * rating. Here is what I had that earned that rating:

I selected a vegetarian plate of potatoes salad, cabbage and seven layer salad.

Want to know how to get there? Travel north on 903 from Maury NC toward Greenville and just watch for the sign. It will be worth the effort to get there

Have a great Sunday and don’t forget to visit my friends at Rose’s Kitchen.
